"When I get a little money I buy books; and if any is left, I buy food and clothes."

The War of the Worlds
Author: H.G. Wells
Copyright date: 1898

This book is truly frightening. If you look at it from modern standards, it might not be so scary to you. I mean who would get scared by these metal monsters in the days of nukes and movies with alien freaks like Alien? But if you remember that this book was written before 1900, you can appreciate that it would have scared the hell out of everyone in those days.

This book also has more beneath the surface than an invasion of unstoppable Martians. Wells has powerful social messages hidden in his work. I'll leave it to you to find them.

This great science fiction book helped pioneer the genre. And though a lot of my contemporaries don't like the ending, I think it was great. I also think this book is truly scary, more so than all the computer-generated aliens in the movies these days. Even if you don't like science fiction, you will probably enjoy this book.
