This book is amazing. The author, Steven Callahan, drifted alone in a life raft for 76 days! He drifted 1,800 miles across the Atlantic ocean until he was found by fishermen off the coast of a Caribbean island.

Callahan survived by catching rainwater and using two inflatable devices that converted salt water into fresh water. For food, he used a spear gun to spear any fish he could. He hung up pieces of the fish to dry and then had to eat them raw.

The most amazing part of this book was reading about Callahan's will to survive. The entire journey, nothing would go the way it was supposed to. His devices to make fresh water broke, the bottom ring of his life raft was punctured, his spear gun broke, and all the time he was tortured by sun and storms. Yet through it all, he maintained his sanity and his will to live. When something broke, he came up with some ingenious, innovative way to fix it. He held on to hope no matter how hard it got, and somehow made it through 76 days on the brink of despair.

This book is a must read.
