Simplicity Wins the Day

There's so many movies out there that try to tell you what to do if you want to be cool. Damn near all of them, actually. There's those movies about retarded teenage girls fighting for popularity, and those movies about drivin' real fast and listening to loud music.

I went to see Shrek 2 today. And you know what? It was hilarious! The writers come up with jokes that are funny for both kids and adults. And they end up making a great love story too. At first I thought this was an incredible feat, but now I think I know how it's done.

Ever play any of the Zelda games? They are all instant classics, for the same reason the Shrek movies are hits. I'm sure you all agree that Link - the main character in those games - is one of the most badass characters you could ever meet. Yet he doesn't smoke, doesn't cuss, and doesn't associate with several scantily-clad females. He doesn't have to. He's in love with Princess Zelda, and he has the enormous balls to do whatever it takes to save her. He has courage, honor, and morals. That's why Link is a classic - that's what people really like.

I really like it when writers get that point. It makes for the most enjoyable movies and games, ones that don't ever get old.
